About Methimez: Methimez (Methimazole) - 5mg (10 Tablets) is used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, agranulocytosis, hypercalcemia and other conditions affecting the thyroid gland. This drug belongs to a class of drugs called anti-thyroids. The active ingredient in Methimez is 5mg of methimezole which works by inhibiting the thyroperoxidase enzyme. This limits the amount of thyroxine produced and consequently treats the symptoms of an overactive thyroid gland. Methimez tablets can be administered before radioactive iodine treatment or a thyroid surgery.

How to use Methimez

Take the medicine exactly as directed by the doctor or medical professional. It is usually taken every 8 hours although the dosage can differ depending on your specific condition and how you respond to treatment. You can take the tablets with or without food. Use a glass of water to swallow the tablet which should not be broken, crushed or chewed. Do not discontinue use even when the symptoms subside because the symptoms return when the dosage is cut off prematurely.

Methimez Dosage

Since this is a prescription drug, the doctor will indicate how much you should take and how often. Usually, the doctor will start off an adult with 15mg per day taken in 8 hour intervals. That is one 5mg tablet three times daily. If the patient is not responding to this dosage, it can be increased to 60mg per day; that is three 5mg tablets taken thrice. For patients undergoing maintenance with this drug, the dose is as low as 5mg to 15mg per day. For children, the dosage is 0.4mg/kg given in three doses every 8 hours. The doctor will instruct you on how to divide the tablet or dissolve it in water. Follow the dosage and duration to the letter without missing a dose. In case of a missed dose, take it as soon as possible unless it is close to the next dose. Do not take a double dose to recover a missed dose.

Methimez Side Effects

Patients using Methimez 5mg tablets can experience side effects such as hives, skin rash, skin pigmentation, headache, a tingling sensation, swelling, drowsiness, fainting and dizziness. Other symptoms include losing the sense of taste and jaundice. Inform your doctor if you experience any side effects especially serious ones like fainting, dizziness and jaundice.

Methimez Precautions

If you are allergic to Methimez or other anti-thyroids, do not take this medication. Patients who have depleted blood cells or liver disease should also be cautious and the doctor should consider these conditions before treatment. If you are pregnant or are breastfeeding, caution should be taken to prevent experiencing adverse side effects.
