About Methimez: Methimez (Methimazole) - 10mg (10 Tablets) is an oral prescription medicine used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. The active ingredient, methimazole, works by limiting the thyroid gland from producing excess amounts of thyroxine hormone. It is used to counter hyperthyroidism and prevent the unwanted symptoms. It can also be used before undergoing thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment.
How to use Methimez
This is an oral medication that is in tablet form. Each tablet has 10mg of methimazole and the doctor will prescribe the correct dosage depending on your specific situation. It can be taken with or without food and should be accompanied with a glass of water. It should be taken the same way for every dose e.g. if you take the first dose without food, continue doing so until the dosage is over. Do not break or chew the tablet as it should be swallowed whole.
Methimez Dosage
Methimez is a prescription drug and should only be taken under doctor’s orders. Hyperthyroidism needs a diagnosis before any medication is started. In cases of mild hyperthyroidism, the dosage is usually one 5mg tablet taken every 8 hours. For severe hyperthyroidism, the patient can use one Methimez (Methimazole) - 10mg tablet every 8 hours. Patients experiencing severe symptoms can be advised to take 20mg every 8 hours. The maximum recommended dosage is 40mg per day. Other patients who are on a maintenance dose can be instructed to take between 5mg and 15mg per day. Ensure you follow the prescribed dosage until the end of the duration. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can or skip the dose if it is close to the next dose. Do not discontinue use before the prescription is complete because the symptoms will return.
Methimez Side Effects
Methimez (Methimazole) - 10mg (10 Tablets) has some unwanted side effects that patients can experience. They include itching, lowered sense of taste, hair loss, headache, nausea, joint and muscle pain and a depleted amount of platelets and white blood cells. Other side effects include skin rash, skin pigmentation and paresthesia (a tingling or stinging sensation). Inform your doctor if you experience any side effects from this drug.
Methimez Precautions
Tell your doctor if you are taking any medication, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, to prevent unwanted interactions.
