How to use Metaflam
Metaflam (Meloxicam) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to treat pain and inflammation in acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions in dogs.
Metaflam Dosage
Metaflam (Meloxicam) is usually prescribed at a dosage of approximately 0.1mg per kg of body weight. The initial dose is usually 0.2mg per kg body weight. Metaflam comes as a chewable tablet that can be administered directly into the dogs mouth or put into its food.
Metaflam Side Effects
Most side effects associated with Metaflam (Meloxicam) appear within the first week of treatment and are transient. If they continue, treatment may need to be stopped.
The most common side effects reported are loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, fecal blood, lethargy and renal failure. Less common side effects include hemorrhagic diarrhoea, hematemesis, gastrointestinal ulceration and elevated liver enzymes.
Metaflam Precautions
Metaflam (Meloxicam) should not be taken in any of the following cases:
- pregnant or lactating dogs
- dogs with gastrointestinal issues
- dogs who are younger than six weeks old or who weight less than 4kg
- dogs who are allergic to meloxicam
- dogs who are already taking NSAIDs, steroidal treatments, aminoglycoside antibiotics or anticoagulants
- dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive dogs
