About Tenormin: Tenormin (Atenolol) is a medicine that is used to alleviate symptoms of chest pains or what is medically referred to as angina pectoris. This medicine may also be prescribed to treat other conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure) and prevention of stage fright or heart attacks. Your physician may prescribe the medicine to you as a solo or combinational treatment for other conditions not listed here.

How to use Tenormin

Tenormin (Atenolol) comes in 100mg strength tablets. Your physician will provide you with instructions on how to take these tablets within the course of your treatment. Never chew, split, crush or dissolve the contents of the tablets. Such actions only hasten the absorption of the active ingredients of the medicine into your body. This affects the effectiveness of the tablets as they have been formulated to release the active ingredients at a slow rate for effective treatment. Unless provided with specific instructions by your physician, you may take the medicine with or without food. Always take a full glass of water whenever you take this medicine.

Tenormin Dosage

This medicine is to be used strictly if your doctor has prescribed it for you. Do not use the medicine as an over-the-counter and take your dosage from your physician. Self-medication is not encouraged as it may lead to ineffectiveness of the treatment or even health complications. Your dosage will be unique to the condition you are treating, your present health condition and your medical history. It will also be dependent on whether you are taking other medicines including prescriptions, non-prescriptions, herbal medicine or supplements.

Tenormin Side Effects

As soon as you start your treatment with Tenormin (Atenolol), you may notice the occurrence of side effects. This is normal as the body is trying to get adjusted to the medicine. In most cases, these side effects soon fade away as the treatment continues. These side effects include dizziness, drowsiness which in most cases is mild, lightheadedness and an abnormal feeling of tiredness. If these side effects become bothersome, or they persist, check with your physician as soon as possible. Talk to your doctor about other side effects that you most likely will experience within the course of your treatment that may not have been listed here. Also, check out for signs of an allergic reaction which include swelling of ankles, feet or other body parts due to fluid retention, chest tightness, hives or rashes.

Tenormin Precautions

Tenormin (Atenolol) is known to react with different medicine. Close supervision by your physician will, therefore, be necessary if you are taking flecainide, quinidine, verapamil, amiodarone or disopyramide. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive, inform your doctor before starting to take the medicine. If you have a history of a heart block, the use of this medicine is not recommended, and your physician may prescribe to you an alternative for your treatment. Do not alter your dosage or stop taking this medicine without instructions from your physician. If you have any queries or concerns during your treatment, consult your physician as soon as possible.
