About Quinin:
Quinin, also known by its generic name Quinine Sulphate defines a drug applicable in treating less complicate malaria infections. Quinin is a monotherapy, meaning it can be administered alone and can also be used together with other medications. Quinin works by targeting and eliminating malarial parasites which are found in red blood cells of the host.
The mechanism that Quinin uses makes it highly effective in reducing the threat of malaria infections. It is widely used where chloroquine resistance has been proven. It is emphasized that patients keep in mind Quinin is only a curative and not a preventive drug. It hence should only be used for known cases of malaria infection. Due to its safety, it should never be used to prevent malaria. Patients may be tempted to use the drug for leg cramps, and this is greatly discouraged by medical practitioners. This is so since although the drug has been studied for treating leg cramps, it has not been established effective for the condition and poses significant health risks to patients suffering from leg cramps.
Quinine comes as a form of 300mg tablets which are orally administered. The prescription should only be done by a qualified physician or your personal doctor. For adults with less complicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria infections, a dosage of 600mg after every 8hours for seven days is administered. This however may vary depending on the patient’s health conditions and particulars of patient’s symptoms. For symptoms found resistant to Quinin, additional medicines including doxycycline or clindamycin may be used by your physician. To ensure that the drug responds well and that the malarial infection is being treated properly, patients are advised to ensure that they are closely monitored by their physicians when using the medication.
Depending on the severity of a patient, dosage, and hormones, use of Quinin to treat malarial infections may have different side effects to the body. The most common include:
These are just but a few side effects you expect to experience when using a dosage of Quinin. These are not severe and should not cause an alarm unless prolonged. In the case of severe side effects, one is advised to consult a doctor or physician as soon as possible. Severe side effects include but are not limited to; loss of appetite, bloody urine, blurred vision and tremors among other side effects. For full information on the side effects, you are likely to experience, consult your physician.
During its action against malarial infections, Quinin (Quinine Sulphate) triggers a decrease in blood platelets. These are cells that are used to form clots. This action could lead to serious bleeding or serious kidney problems. Patients are advised to seek medical attention as soon as they notice any form of bruising or bleeding.
Patients are also advised to seek immediate medical attention once they notice the fever or symptoms are not improving. Also, consult your medical practitioner if the symptoms reappear once you are through with your medication.
