About Augmentin 625 Duo:
Augmentin 625 Duo (Amoxicillin Trihydrate/ potassium clavulanate) is an antibiotic drug used to treat the conditions outlined above. Along with these, it also can be used to treat infections of the ears and skin. It is a combination of amoxicillin, a penicillin antibiotic, and clavulanate that is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Clavulanic acid prevents resistance of certain strains of bacteria to amoxicillin hence helping the antibiotic to work.
How to use Augmentin 625 Duo
This medicine is taken orally, and it should be taken under prescription. It can be taken regardless of meals although absorption of the potassium clavulanate is better when Augmentin is taken prior to the meal. Taking augmentin before eating also reduces the chances of developing a gastrointestinal intolerance.
Augmentin 625 Duo Dosage
The dosage will depend on the age and the severity of the condition. However, the dose for adults is usually one tablet of Augmentin (Amoxicillin Trihydrate/ potassium clavulanate) 500mg/ 125mg every 12 hours. For the 250mg tablet, an adult should take one every 8 hours. The dosage is higher for patients with severe respiratory or other bodily infections who should take one 500 mg tablet every 8 hours. Remember that you cannot substitute two 250 mg Augmentin tablets for one 500 mg tablet. This is because the level of clavulanate (125 mg) is the same for both the 250 mg and 500 mg amoxicillin Augmentin tablets.
Patients with renal failure or impairment should take a lower dose unless the bacterial infection is severe. The dose for patients with less than 30ml/min glomerular filtration rate should be one 500mg or 250mg tablet every 24 hours. Similarly, patients on hemodialysis should take 250mg or 500mg for 24 hours but should receive an additional dose during and after the dialysis.
Augmentin 625 Duo Side Effects
Side effects of Augmentin include diarrhea, itchiness, nausea and vomiting, oral or vaginal thrush and stomach upset. Other side effects are agitation and confusion, fever, loss of appetite, jaundice and easily bruising and bleeding. In some rare cases, patients who are allergic to penicillin can also develop harmful side effects.
Augmentin 625 Duo Precautions
If you are allergic to penicillin, amoxicillin or clavulanate, you should not use Augmentin. Allergic reactions to other antibiotic drugs should be checked before this drug is prescribed. Patients with kidney disease or on dialysis should also inform the doctor before taking this medication. If you develop jaundice or liver problems due to Augmentin, discontinue use immediately. Interactions with an unborn baby are unknown, and you should consult with the doctor if you’re pregnant or are planning on it. Both amoxicillin and clavulanate can pass into breast milk, and nursing mothers are supposed to take necessary precautions. Augmentin is known to reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills, and non-hormonal birth control can be used when taking Augmentin.
